Theater Project OKd by Planning Board

Despite protests from more than 100 Vista Monte residents who fear that a theater complex at Alamo Street and Tapo Canyon Road would devalue their homes and erode their quality of life, planning commissioners have approved the project with a few minor revisions.

Commissioners this week unanimously approved developer Robert Selleck’s proposed 54,000-square-foot movie theater and restaurant complex.

The plan will now go before the Simi Valley City Council for final approval.

Residents in the neighboring Vista Monte housing development fear that the theater complex would devalue their homes and plague them with nuisances such as trash, excessive noise and lights.

They also said the developer has not given a wide enough greenbelt to separate the property from residents and that the project does not follow city guidelines.

“We’re not against the project completely; we just want them to acknowledge more of our concerns,” said Vista Monte resident Susanne Waite.

The city, however, contended that residents have been aware that the land is zoned for commercial development, which could include entertainment complexes.

Commissioners did place restrictions on the height of parking lot lights, trash pickup hours and the size of signs within the property.
