New Coalition to Seek Funds to Protect Coast

Officials in this city that depends on beach-going tourism this week took the first step toward organizing a coalition that will lobby for funds to protect California’s coastline.

City leaders budgeted $30,000 to help launch the California Coastal Coalition, which will try to create policies and programs to promote the preservation, protection and restoration of California’s 1,000-mile coastline.

Mayor Shirley S. Dettloff said the organization would help coastal cities obtain state and federal money for preservation projects.

“The preservation of beaches is the responsibility of the cities, and that is not something we are always able to do,” Dettloff said. “We have a lot of people who come from out of state to visit our coasts, so we need state and federal assistance.”

Officials hope other cities will back the project. The organization would be a branch of a group known as the American Coastal Coalition, which protects coastlines nationwide.

Beaches here and elsewhere in Southern California have been battered by high surf and rain from El Nino-fueled storms in recent months.
