Newbury Park Fire Dangers

Share

My wife and I have lived in Newbury Park since 1974, and in those 24 years a number of serious fires have swept through the area.

The most recent was the Greenmeadow fire. Thanks to the skillful firefighters in Newbury Park and surrounding counties, the fire was contained and our home and the homes of our neighbors were spared.

We may not be so fortunate in the future.

When we first moved into the area, our insurance carrier dropped our fire insurance due to the fire hazard the area posed. We were able to obtain fire insurance from the carrier who insured the previous owner.

In the debate about the Dos Vientos development at the Feb. 10 Thousand Oaks City Council meeting, the safety and well-being of the community was discussed.

The need for an expanded fire station or stations must be considered.

Appearing before the City Council, the developer informed all present that his company has built homes in California for a number of years. I wonder if he ever built a development facing a wilderness area such as the Santa Monica Conservancy?

Obviously, Lynn Road and Potrero must be greatly expanded to accommodate more firetrucks along with an expanded fire station.

The community’s safety cannot be ignored.
