Hospital Board Postpones Decision on Closing Facility

A decision on the future of the South Bay Medical Center in Redondo Beach has been placed on hold until next month.

The Beach Cities Health District, the public agency that owns the hospital, was scheduled to make a decision on the hospital’s future Thursday. Board members said they put off their decision until the next meeting on March 26 because they need more time to review the proposals on what to do with the hospital.

The corporation that runs the hospital announced last year that it will close the 203-bed facility at the end of May. Board members are evaluating four proposals that range from leasing the hospital to a competitor to tearing it down and building an assisted living complex for the elderly.
