After 17 years on the Capistrano Unified School Board, Trustee Paul B. Haseman announced Monday he will leave in June because his employer is transferring him to Washington, D.C.

Haseman, 52, an international attorney representing Raytheon Systems Co., was elected in 1981. The board vice president has been selected to serve as board president three times. During his tenure, the district has grown from 17,000 to more than 40,000 students, officials said.

“It’s been gratifying to have the opportunity to serve the students and families of Capistrano as the district has grown in stature to be one of the best in California and nationally,” Haseman said in a prepared statement.

The school board plans to decide at its March 9 meeting whether to make an interim appointment or leave the position vacant until the November election.
