College Panel Backs Asian Studies Major

Cal State Northridge moved a step closer to adding a bachelor of arts program in Asian American studies last week when the campus Educational Policies Committee unanimously approved the proposed major.

The seven-member faculty committee voted unanimously in favor of the new bachelor’s program, which now must be approved by CSUN President Blenda Wilson and Louanne Kennedy, vice president of academic affairs.

“Getting the committee’s approval is a major hurdle,” said Kenyon Chan, chairman of the Asian American studies department in CSUN’s College of Humanities. “It completed an 18-month process and we’re very happy that the proposal was passed unanimously.”

Pending final approval by the chancellor of the California State University system, Northridge could become the second CSU school--after San Francisco State--to offer a bachelor’s program in Asian American studies.

Three University of California campuses--Los Angeles, Irvine and Santa Barbara--also offer a bachelor’s degree in the subject area.

“If approved, we hope to be able to offer the major by fall 1998 at the earliest, but spring 1999 is more likely,” Chan said.
