Terms for Annexation Spur Protest by Residents

Share

Annexing Newport Coast would probably be good for Newport Beach. But Newport Coast residents are questioning whether it would be good for them.

Residents presented the City Council with petitions Monday, protesting the terms under which Newport Coast would become part of Newport Beach.

A chief complaint is that they would be the only residents in Newport Beach charged for trash collection. City voters in 1996 approved a measure requiring that all businesses and residents in areas annexed by the city be assessed for trash collection.

For its part, the city has determined that annexing Newport Coast, located south of Corona del Mar, would generate at least $2.4 million annually in sales and property tax revenue.
