Computers Make Branch a ‘Virtual Library’

Library officials introduced computer terminals Tuesday that make up a “virtual library” service at the Palms-Rancho Park branch of the Los Angeles Public Library.

Twelve computer terminals funded by a gift from the Bandai Foundation offer access to the Internet and the extensive databases of the public library system, said Hosneya Khattab, the branch’s librarian for young adult readers. The computers are very popular with children, who have used them to produce newsletters as well as do homework, Khattab said.

Library spokesman David Haut said 37 of the system’s 57 branches are now equipped with the computer work stations. He said funding for all “virtual libraries” will be secured by the end of this year.
