A teenage ward at Camp Karl Holton is facing up to four years in state prison for his role in an assault on a teacher at the juvenile probation camp.

The unnamed female teacher was working as a substitute instructor at Camp Holton on Feb. 6 when the attack took place in a classroom while other students were present, according to authorities. She was taken to a local hospital after the attack, where she was treated for minor injuries and released the same day. She has since returned to work, said officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Education, which operates the schools at Holton and other county probation camps.

John Brown, 18, whose hometown was not disclosed, was charged with battery on a school employee and assault likely to produce great bodily injury, the district attorney said. He is scheduled to be arraigned March 5 in Glendale Municipal Court.

Two other wards, both minors whose names were not released, are also being investigated for allegedly taking part in the attack, authorities said.

Located just outside Lake View Terrace in Angeles National Forest, Camp Holton is home to 114 boys and young men between 15 and 18. The secured facility is one of 19 juvenile probation camps in Los Angeles County.
