Fair Offers Advice to Help Deter Children From Gangs

Share

About 20 community groups will hold an information fair Saturday at El Sereno Middle School to provide families with resources to help keep their children away from gangs.

Organized by Barrio Action Youth and Family Resource Center, the fair is the official open house for L.A. Bridges, a city-funded gang prevention program that targets middle school students.

On Saturday, parents of the 2,400 El Sereno students can learn about after-school programs, counseling, parenting classes and mental health services.

“It’s important that the community comes out and knows what’s available to them,” said Tammy Membreno, director of Barrio Action Group. “These are young people, and we want to nip [gang involvement] in the bud so they won’t need intervention services later.”

City Councilman Richard Alatorre, who pushed for the expansion of the program to four schools in his district, will be the speaker.

The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the school at Eastern Avenue and Gambier Street.
