Bond Backer Named to School Board Seat

The parent who spearheaded the Ventura school district’s campaign for an $81-million bond measure has been selected to fill a vacant seat on the school board.

Debbie Golden, 45, was the unanimous choice Tuesday night of board members to fill the seat vacated by Diane Harriman, who resigned last month because of family and personal commitments.

Golden, a mother of three and longtime community volunteer, beat out 10 other candidates for the post. She will fill the remaining 21 months of Harriman’s four-year term.

“I have had a sincere desire and willingness for many years to serve my community, especially where children are concerned,” said Golden, who has served on the district’s long-range planning committee and parent advisory group. “This is a great way to do that and try to make a difference for kids.”

Golden started volunteering in the Ventura district 13 years ago when her oldest daughter was in kindergarten. Last year, she headed a successful campaign to pass an $81-million bond measure to shore up local schools and build new facilities.

Golden was sworn in Tuesday night.
