Speakers Ask Trustees to Oppose Prop. 227
Half a dozen parents asked school board members this week to take an official stance opposing Proposition 227, which would end most bilingual programs.
Speakers included Teresa Farias, head of the Santa Ana Unified School District Bilingual District Advisory Committee, who presented a resolution opposing Proposition 227.
The measure on the June ballot would remove local control over educational policy and “outlaws” successful language programs, according to the resolution.
More than 70% of the students in Santa Ana are not fluent in English.
About 20 districts statewide have gone on record opposing the proposition.
Board members said they expect to discuss the measure in April.
