6th-Grader Relocation Plan Concerns Parents

Share

Parents of students in a language immersion program are expressing concerns about a Capistrano Unified School District plan to move sixth-graders into middle schools this fall.

The immersion program at Las Palmas Elementary, created in 1992, is designed to teach both English- and Spanish-speaking students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

School officials say the program is tailored for the seven grades, and moving students could jeopardize future grants.

Several trustees this week said they were concerned the students would be miss out on the benefits of a middle-school education.

Barcelona Hills and Richard Henry Dana elementary schools are expected to remain as K-6 programs due to low school enrollment.

The issue will be discussed again March 9 at a 6 p.m. board meeting at 32972 Calle Perfecto.
