Foundation Acts to Halt Development

San Clemente-based Surfrider Foundation filed a federal appeal Thursday in a continuing effort to halt a proposed Marine Corps housing development overlooking a famous surfing beach.

A San Diego federal judge in January gave Marines the OK to build 60 duplexes on a bluff at Camp Pendleton, saying extensive environmental assessments had been satisfied.

The nonprofit organization, dedicated to protecting coastal waters and beaches, contends the project near the Trestles surfing spot will damage the surrounding environment.

The group’s appeal will be considered by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal.

“Do we really need another housing development destroying what’s left of the Southern California coastline?” asked Beach Boys member Bruce Johnson, a longtime member of the Surfrider Foundation’s advisory board. “The answer is absolutely no.”

The Beach Boys are planning to promote the organization during their upcoming 1998 world tour.

Also, Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder donated $50,000 to the organization for costs associated with the appeal.
