77-Year-Old Gets 28 Months for ‘Sad, Half-Hearted’ Heist

A 77-year-old Westminster man who pleaded guilty last year to robbing a bank with an unloaded handgun was sentenced this week to serve 28 months in federal prison.

Ray Lawrence Boeger, who has no prior criminal record, said that a failing business, his wife’s medical problems and too many pints of ale led to his Sept. 17, 1997, robbery of the World Savings & Loan in Huntington Beach.

U.S. District Judge Gary L. Taylor ordered Boeger to begin serving his sentence on April 27.

In what police described as a “sad, half-hearted crime,” Boeger--after an afternoon of drinking with friends--donned a fake beard, walked into the bank and apologetically asked a teller for $2,500.

He was soon arrested at home after witnesses gave police the license plate number of his 1980 Cadillac.
