Women’s Hockey Coming to Orange County

The 1998 USA Hockey Girls’/Women’s National Championships will be April 1-5 at Disney ICE and the Glacial Gardens Ice Arena, both in Anaheim.

Expected to participate from the Olympic gold medal-winning U.S. team are its captain, Cammi Granato, Alana Blahocki and Chris Bailey. Five different national titles--Senior A and B, Midget, Pee-Wee and Squirts--will be contested by 46 teams.

Newport Harbor water polo goalkeeper Jon Pharris has committed to attend Princeton, his father, Jerry, said Thursday.

Pharris was the Sea View League’s most valuable player last season and a member of the Times Orange County all-county second team. He’s also a three-time high school All-American with U.S. Water Polo.

Carin Zielinski has been named women’s volleyball coach at Southern California College, Athletic Director Bob Wilson announced. Zielinski replaces John Lee who coached two seasons before resigning in January to further his education.

Zielinski was the interim coach at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minn., last season, guiding the team to a 43-11 record and the NCCAA semifinals. She played volleyball at Ball State.
