A woman was arrested in a murder-for-hire case that unraveled when the alleged hit men tried to collect more money, police said.

The 27-year-old woman was arrested Monday on suspicion of soliciting to commit murder. She was released after posting $30,000 bail.

Police said the woman had promised to pay thousands of dollars to some men if they would kill her husband of nine years. The gunmen allegedly tried to kill the husband Dec. 22, but he survived.

Police declined to provide details of the attack.

Within a few days of the attempt, the men began demanding money, but the woman refused to pay, police said.

They then tried to extort money from her parents, threatening to go to police if they weren’t paid. The woman’s father paid $6,000, but the gunmen demanded more, said Oakland Police Sgt. Ersie Joyner III.

Family members then went to police.

Police were trying Wednesday to identify the would-be hit men.
