The National Assn. of Chiefs of Police says the number of officers killed in the line of duty rose 27% in 1997.

The organization said Tuesday that preliminary reports from police departments around the country show the death toll has reached at least 150, compared with 1996’s preliminary figure of 118. The final count in 1996 was 125 deaths, which was uncharacteristically low.

Association officials said this year’s figure is similar to those in years before 1996.
