Venturan to Lead Panel on Aging

Patricia Longo, a longtime Ventura resident and advocate for the elderly, recently was named chairwoman of the California Commission on Aging.

Longo, onetime Ventura deputy mayor and member of the South Coast Area Transit system board, was first appointed to the 25-member commission by Gov. Pete Wilson in 1993. She was asked to serve a second term in 1996 and elected to a one-year term as chairwoman in December.

The commission meets monthly and advises the governor and Legislature on issues relevant to the state’s elderly residents.

Commission Executive Director John Kehoe said Longo impressed colleagues with her efforts to bring elder abuse to the Legislature’s attention. In May, she helped organize a summit that resulted in legislative hearings and two proposed bills.
