SCC Women Win Easily to Advance

Arnee Pina hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Southern California College a 29-point halftime lead and it rolled to a 75-58 victory over Concordia (Mich.) in the SCC women’s basketball tournament.

Concordia outscored SCC in the second half, 37-25, but could get no closer than 15 points. SCC had four players in double digits, with Pina leading the way. She hit five of eight from three-point territory to finish with 15 points. Pina had six assists.

Elaine Whittemore scored 14 points, Kristi Wright had 13 and Alana Kempton had 11. Concordia’s Kristy Bilbie had 21 points and eight rebounds.

In the Eagle women’s basketball tournament:

Concordia 57, Dominican 39--Heather Carll scored 18 points to lead Concordia in its first-round victory. The Eagles advance to the championship game today against North Park, which defeated Bethany College, 72-49, Friday. The championship game starts at 4 p.m. Concordia is 9-3.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Chapman 75, Whitman 44--April Abeyta scored 12 points and had 15 rebounds in a victory for Chapman. Teammate Lyndsay Brown was the leading scorer with 14 points for the Panthers.

Chapman limited Whitman to 28.6% shooting from the field and forced 32 turnovers. The Panthers also had 15 steals.

Emily Stewart had 17 points for Whitman. Teammate Anna Saltonstall had 10 rebounds. Courtney Kanegae had nine assists and six points for Chapman.

St. Mary’s 81, UC Irvine 70--Former El Modena basketball player Jamie Shine scored 17 points to lead St. Mary’s (9-3). Shine was seven of eight from the free-throw line, hitting six of six in the final minutes of the game.

The Anteaters (5-5) were led by senior guard Sabrina Roberson, who scored 19 points.

St. Mary’s dominated Irvine early and lead at halftime, 38-27. The Anteaters cut the lead to four in the second half on a Nikole Payton three-pointer with seven minutes remaining. A steal by J.R. Payne and a converted fast-break basket by Shine put St. Mary’s up by six.

In the Concordia Classic men’s basketball tournament:

Concordia 70, Concordia (Ill.) 50--Concordia led by only four at the half, but shot 52% from the field in the second half, outscoring Concordia (Ill.), 42-26.

Jet Quillen led the Eagles (7-6) with 12 points and Joey Busch added 11 in the first round game. Kalim Scott led in rebounding with 12 for the Eagles. Concordia (Ill.) was led by Tom Leinberger with 18 points.
