Afghanistan
Paula R. Newberg’s article, “Cold War Is Over, but Hot War Drags On” (Opinion, Dec. 28) adequately explicated the multitude of problems that has plagued Afghanistan. She also refers to the world’s responsibility to help Afghans find a solution. But, who is the world? A superfluous United Nations? An apathetic superpower--the U.S.? Competing regional powers? Myopic warlords?
No single entity has an overriding interest to stick its neck out for the people of Afghanistan, while the people are disabled and thus are caught in a vicious circle. It will go on indefinitely unless the moral imperatives emanating from this tragedy override the narrow self-interest of the players and the U.S. takes up its leadership role.
