District to Be Model for School Improvement
A delegation from the nation’s capital is visiting Long Beach this week to learn what California’s third-largest school district is doing right.
General Julius Becton, superintendent of Washington, D.C., schools, Sen. Jim Jeffords (R-Vermont) and Rep. Howard McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) are exploring ways to improve the problem-plagued Washington schools.
Long Beach has established a reputation as a large urban school district that works better than most, said Judy Seal of the Long Beach Community Partnership, an organization working to improve the city’s public schools.
A central focus of the group’s visit is to see how the Long Beach district works with Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach to prepare students for jobs and higher education without the need for remedial classes, Seal said.
