Police Chiefs to Talk About Mental Illness
With their cities home to the bulk of the county’s mentally ill residents, Ventura Police Chief Richard Thomas and Oxnard Police Chief Harold Hurtt will address the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Ventura County tonight.
The regular meeting begins at 7:15 p.m. at the Parish Hall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 3290 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.
Alliance officials say that with police often called to situations involving the mentally ill, it is important for families and others to know how to give information when calling for help.
Police, in turn, can learn from families of mentally ill people how best to interact with someone who may be psychotic, officials said.
