Pol Pot, the former leader of Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge guerrilla group, has been found, according to a Thai newspaper: sick, dispirited and still in the custody of his former comrades in their jungle stronghold in northern Cambodia.

The Bangkok Post today knocked down recent rumors that the elusive Communist leader had fled from Cambodia to China, reporting that one of its journalists traveled to Anlong Veng near the border with Thailand and spoke with and photographed Pol Pot.

The paper said Pol Pot looked very ill and spoke in a barely audible voice.

Pol Pot, who is believed to be about 70 years old, was purged by his former comrades in June after a bloody falling out among the group’s top leaders. He was sentenced to life under house arrest at a show trial in July in Anlong Veng.
