Board to Redo Vote on 1st K-5 School

The Conejo Valley school board on Tuesday is scheduled to rescind a December vote and then repeat it to make sure the decision is made legally.

The Dec. 9 vote made Lang Ranch Elementary School the district’s first K-5 elementary school.

Because the board’s agenda made no mention that such a decision--which followed a related discussion of attendance boundaries--was being considered, some parents questioned its legality. By law, public agencies must warn the public on their agendas of any possible action.

The district’s legal counsel agreed that the Dec. 9 vote may have violated the law. As a result, “We want to put this thing to rest and make sure everything is copacetic” by repeating the vote, said Dolores Didio, board president.

Although the move may have been in violation of the law, many parents who had wanted their children to walk to the new school--and who were cut out of earlier proposals--were thrilled with the K-5 plan.

Trustees also are scheduled to formally adopt attendance boundaries for Lang Ranch, the Conejo Valley Unified School District’s 20th elementary school.

As proposed, the northern boundary is Sunset Hills Boulevard, the western boundary is Erbes Road, the southern boundary is Avenida de Los Arboles, and city limits become the eastern boundary. The Woodridge development, which was part of December’s plan, has been excluded in the latest draft of school boundaries.
