In another South Coast League game:

Dana Hills 74, San Clemente 65--Brett Nowell scored 22 points and Tim McKee had 21 for Dana Hills (8-9, 1-0).

In the Century League:

Villa Park 59, No. 4 Canyon 54--Alex Will and Alan Verzani each scored 18 points for Villa Park (11-5, 1-0). Andrew Gaulden scored 27 points for Canyon (12-4, 0-1).

In the Empire League:

No. 3 Katella 62, Kennedy 51--Robert Abercrombie scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half as Katella outscored visiting Kennedy, 35-27. Don Carey contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Knights (16-1, 1-0).

Cypress 57, El Dorado 53--Travis Weaver scored 14 of his 24 points in the third quarter as Cypress (6-10, 1-0) outscored visiting El Dorado, 23-7, to take an eight-point lead. John Radaza contributed 19 points for Cypress (6-10, 1-0).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 48, Buena Park 46--Josh Fischer scored 15 points for La Habra in a league opener. Nick Hankins scored 14 points for Buena Park (8-8).

In the Golden West League:

No. 6 Tustin 61, Saddleback 50--Peter Johnston and Carlos Lua each scored 12 points for Tustin (15-3, 1-0). Lua scored all his in the second half, when the Tillers outscored visiting Saddleback, 37-26.

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 59, Brethren Christian 50--Jon Stoa scored 12 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed 10 rebounds for Whittier Christian (10-7, 1-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 54, No. 10 Laguna Hills 52--Ryan Simpson made two free throws with 26 seconds left in the game and then had a key rebound that clinched the upset for Estancia (12-5, 1-0).

After falling behind by two points, Laguna Hills’ Josh Pierson had a chance to tie the score but missed a shot. Simpson fought with two Hawks’ players and came away with the rebound and prevented another shot.

One of the other keys to the victory was Brett Valbuena, a reserve who scored 20 points. Bill Rietkerk had 16 points for Laguna Hills (13-4, 0-1).

In the Sea View League:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 91, Irvine 50--T.J. Williams made eight of 11 shots, including four three-pointers, and Dekker McKeever had 14 points and 15 rebounds for Santa Margarita (16-0, 1-0).

Corona del Mar 50, Woodbridge 48 (OT)--Nick Gabriel made a jump shot from the free-throw line with five seconds remaining to win the game for Corona del Mar (5-12, 1-0). Tim Thurman scored 11 points for the Sea Kings. Barlow scored 11 points for Woodbridge (9-9, 0-1). Scott Barlow scored 11 points for Woodbridge.

El Toro 62, Newport Harbor 55--Mark Wulfemeyer made six three-pointers and scored 25 points for El Toro (12-5, 1-0), which led by 16 points at halftime. Matt Jameson scored 18 points for Newport Harbor (11-6, 0-1).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 63, Los Alamitos 57--Sophomore Doug Brown scored 21 points for Esperanza (8-8, 1-0), which outscored Los Alamitos, 16-8, in the fourth quarter. Matt Komer scored 14 points for the Griffins (8-7, 0-1).

Marina 63, Fountain Valley 61--Scot Austin made two free throws to seal the victory for Marina. Austin had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Vikings (8-9, 0-1).

Eric Edmunds scored 22 points for Fountain Valley (0-1 in league).

In nonleague basketball:

No. 2 Brea Olinda 87, Cerritos Gahr 56--Chris McMillian scored 24 points in three quarters and Jeff Mason had 18 points and 17 rebounds for Brea Olinda (14-2).

In Freeway League girls’ basketball:

No. 10 Troy 87, Fullerton 39--Vanessa Yonamine scored 21 points in the league opener for Troy. Teammate Heidi Hardeman scored 14 points and Veronica Johns had 13 points for the Warriors (15-2).

Bethany Ferr scored 22 points for Fullerton (7-8).
