Concordia Falls Short in Overtime, Loses to Caldwell

Josh Giles’ last-second, three-point attempt hit the front of the rim as Concordia fell to Caldwell (N.J.), 55-53, in overtime of the championship game of the Concordia men’s basketball tournament.

Concordia (9-8) also squandered an opportunity near the end of regulation. With the score tied 46-46, Caldwell (11-1) turned the ball over with six seconds left. But Concordia could not get a shot off before time expired.

In overtime, Brian Tonkovich scored five of Caldwell’s nine points.

Kalim Scott had 18 points and 18 rebounds for Concordia.

In the La Jolla men’s basketball tournament:

Southern California College 79, Point Loma Nazarene 69--Justin McIntee scored 23 points and Dennis Keane added 19 points and 11 rebounds for SCC (10-7). Adam Dzierzynski had 17 points and 10 assists for the Vanguards.

In the Redlands women’s basketball tournament:

Pacific Christian 49, Caltech 32--Kimberly Bento scored 15 points and had eight rebounds as Pacific Christian won the consolation final. Elaine Kreiss had 10 points for Pacific Christian (6-9).

Jahnel Curfman had 14 rebounds for Pacific Christian.

Ekkus Meng scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds for Caltech (1-8).

In nonconference women’s gymnastics:

Denver 185.30, Cal State Fullerton 182.275--Marianne Griffen of Cal State Fullerton won the individual all-around with a score of 37.20. Her teammate, Natalia Acosta, finished second (36.775) and Robyn King of Denver (36.325) was third.

In nonconference women’s swimming:

Fresno State 171 1/2, UC Irvine 71 1/2--Arika Earley won the one-meter diving for UC Irvine with 266.70 points. Earley also won the three-meter diving with 288.30 points.

UC Irvine also won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.55.

Fresno State won 10 of the 13 races.
