Qualifying for UC

Re “Scrapping SAT May Not Be Answer to Diversity at UC,” Jan. 7:

Apparently Eugene Garcia and other high officials in the UC system have chosen to ignore the voters’ and taxpayers’ mandate to eliminate affirmative action as a basis for UC admissions. They have created a task force the sole purpose of which is to circumvent the wishes of the majority. This is a slap in the face to voters, who I believe are simply stating, “Let the best academically qualified students into the system on an equal opportunity basis, period.”

The problem cannot be solved by letting in students who may not be able to compete and be successful at the higher UC level by creating “bogus” entrance requirements. We need these officials to use their influence to push for providing a better education at the local level, especially in the minority school districts. Let’s solve the problem from the bottom instead of at the top; that way, all the kids in the state win!
