Lt. Col. Thomas E. Lasser, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, has taken command of the airfield at the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center.

He replaces Lt. Col. Jim Ghormley of Seal Beach, who left the position vacant when he became overall base commander before retiring last year.

Lasser, 51, most recently served as the base’s aviation support facility commander.

He will oversee the 500-acre airfield, 1,000 full-time troops at Los Alamitos and 5,000 to 6,000 reservists on weekends.

“I am not going far, but I’ve got a more important, more visible job,” Lasser said.

Lasser was born in Missouri and has spent much of his life in Southern California.

He was raised in Riverside and lives in Redondo Beach. His last assignment was at a base in Stockton.

He joined the Army in 1965 and flew helicopters in two tours of duty in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross.
