5 Volunteers Cited for Community Service

Five volunteers from North Hollywood, Toluca Lake and Burbank will receive awards today for selfless acts in community service at the fourth annual Angel of the Year Awards ceremony.

The winners--Anita Davy, Randy Holmberg, Tim Murphy, Gloria Gold and Gladys Maasdam--were chosen from dozens of nominations in December for their volunteer efforts in several areas, including community beautification and working with children, the sick and the disabled.

The Angel of the Year Awards were created in 1995 by local businessman Michael Stern, owner of Dana Drug Store in Burbank. Since then, several local businesses have joined Stern to sponsor the awards ceremony, which will be held at 4 p.m. at the North Hollywood Medical Center, 12629 Riverside Drive.

“They look for people who’ve done a lot in their community as volunteers,” Larry Siegel, an event spokesman, said.

Davy was chosen for her involvement in the PTA at Roosevelt elementary, Jordan Middle School and John Burroughs High School in Burbank. She has also served on various school boards for the past 10 years.

Gold has spent much of her time fighting to improve North Hollywood’s appearance. She recently led a crew of 100 volunteers in a cleanup of an elderly woman’s home.

Murphy, a Superior Court judge, created the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and founded the Burbank Outreach Center, an agency involved in aiding children. Murphy also does volunteer work for the Salvation Army, the Red Cross and Burbank Temporary Aid.

Holmberg, who has been confined to a wheelchair for most of his life, runs “Wheelchair Repair 101” training classes and scours the Valley region for wheelchairs to donate to Wheels For Humanity, a nonprofit organization that holds wheelchair drives to supply those in need.

Maasdam serves on the board of directors at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank and spends much of her time giving the patients a shoulder to lean on.

Today’s ceremony is open to the public. The entrance fee is $5 and includes refreshments.
