Concordia Uses Defense to Upset Azusa Pacific, 66-53

Concordia limited Azusa Pacific to 18 points in the second half and upset the Cougars, 66-53, in a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Concordia.

Jaime Gast scored 21 points and Heather Carll added 16 points and 19 rebounds for Concordia (14-4, 2-0). Azusa Pacific is 10-7, 0-2.

Kelly Speas had 13 points for the Cougars, ranked 25th in NAIA.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Southern California College 59, Biola 47--Elaine Whittemore scored 13 points and had 13 rebounds in the victory for SCC. Gina Jojola had 14 points for the Vanguards (15-4, 2-0).

Shari Andreasen scored 20 points for Biola (5-14, 0-2).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

UC San Diego 90, Chapman 49--The Tritons outscored Chapman (12-5) by 37 points in the second half after leading by only four at halftime. Lyndsay Brown scored 13 points and Stephanie Flaxbeard added 10 for the Panthers. Amy McClure led UC San Diego (13-3) with 15 points.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Biola 87, Southern California College 69--Damien Johnson scored 32 points for Biola, 17-1 and 2-0 in conference play.

Terence Wilborn scored 14 points for SCC (11-9, 0-2).

Azusa Pacific 77, Concordia 74--T.J. Walker led seventh-ranked Azusa Pacific (17-3, 2-0) with 20 points.

Concordia (10-9, 1-1) was led by Scott Kalim with 22 points and 13 rebounds.

In nonconference men’s swimming:

USC 162 1/2, UC Irvine 41 1/2--UC Irvine’s Jason Gabrarra tied for second in the 50 freestyle in 21.83 seconds.

At the UCLA diving invitational:

Earley finishes third--UC Irvine’s Erika Earley finished third in the three-meter event with a score of 448.00. Stanford’s Kim Powers (492.30) won the event.
