More Bingo May Be in the Cards

The city may again allow fund-raising bingo games three times a week to help reestablish the 36-year-old Kingsmen drum and bugle corps.

Council members last week voted 3 to 2 to draft an ordinance that would allow any nonprofit organization in the city to hold bingo games three times a week. A similar ordinance, extended last July by the council, expired Dec. 31. Bingo games are now limited to once a week.

Mayor David John Shawver said the drum and bugle corps deserves extra help because it has begun a program offering free drum lessons to Stanton youths.

But Councilman Brian Donahue said that one day of bingo a week should be sufficient for the organization, which he said made a net profit of nearly $300,000 last year from bingo operations without creating any local programs, as required.

The proposed ordinance will be introduced for preliminary approval at the council’s next regular meeting, on Jan. 27.
