Event to Encourage Arts Education
Two county agencies are hosting a formal dinner with a nationally known storyteller tonight to spur community interest in arts education.
The $25 event, which begins at 4:30 p.m. at Ventura City Hall, 501 Poli St., is titled, “Securing the Future for Arts Education in Ventura County.” It is co-sponsored by the Ventura County Arts Council and the Ventura County Superintendent of Schools Office.
The featured guest speaker is Donald Davis of North Carolina. He will tell inspirational tales of how teachers can affect students’ lives through art, said Susan Feller, director of the county’s year-old arts council. Davis also will teach the audience to restore arts education in the countywide school system.
Chuck Weis, superintendent of schools, also will highlight a state initiative to create what he calls a “renaissance in arts education in California.”
The state education officials recently released a report that calls for $60 billion to increase arts education during the next seven years. It recommends legislation to make art a priority in the schools.
