Coalition to Hold Talks on Forming School District

Share

The Westside Cityhood Coalition will meet Wednesday night to discuss the formation of an independent school district, the group’s chairman said.

“This is the first step toward cityhood and our main concern at the moment,” said Dave Tuttle.

The school district would be called the Westside Unified School District.

The Westside Cityhood Coalition seeks to create a city encompassing the neighborhoods of Hollywood, Westwood, Bel-Air, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Venice, Westchester and the Los Angeles International Airport area.

Home to 643,000 people, the city would be called Westside.

To create an independent school district, the coalition needs 11,300 signatures of voters living in those neighborhoods before it can submit a formal petition to the Los Angeles County Office of Education, which would review the request for compliance with state law, Tuttle said.

The group hopes to collect the signatures by March in order to include the proposal as a ballot measure in the June 1999 elections.

The coalition will meet at 7 p.m. at Temple Israel of Hollywood, 7300 Hollywood Blvd.
