Rise in Homicide Rate Spurs Summit on Crime

Responding to the increased number of homicides and violent crime in Wilmington and the harbor area, U.S. Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-Carson) has planned a crime summit Friday to address public safety issues.

Homicides in the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Division, which covers Wilmington, San Pedro and Harbor City, increased 72% last year. Homicides in the rest of the city dropped 17%.

Millender-McDonald has asked several law enforcement officials to speak at the public meeting.

Guest speakers that have been scheduled include Los Angeles Police Chief Bernard C. Parks, Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block, Los Angeles Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti and Los Angeles City Atty. James Hahn.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Banning Park Recreation Center at 1331 Eubank Ave., Wilmington.
