Gang Members Suspected in Gunfire, Hit-and-Run Incidents

Suspected gang members kept police officers in Ventura busy Monday night, with reports of shots fired in the western part of the city, and a shouting match followed by a hit-and-run accident in the east end of town.

No one was injured, and the events were unrelated, said Ventura Police Lt. Roger Nustad.

The first incident occurred about 5:10 p.m., when residents of the 100 block of Vince Street called police after the passenger in an older white Toyota Celica shot a gun into the street.

Residents said the two men in the car were chasing a brown Oldsmobile Cutlass, but police were unable to locate either car.

Three hours later, police were called to Cabrillo Village, where two groups of gang members were shouting slogans and insults at each other. One group of men struck a parked pickup truck as they drove away, Nustad said. Police are still sorting out what happened, he said.

“You’ve got a bunch of different gangs in the city, and that’s all there is to it,” Nustad said.

Both investigations are continuing, he said.
