Paula Jones

The obvious reason why Paula Jones will not do the unselfishly patriotic thing by settling her sensational lawsuit against our president, as urged by Judge H. Lee Sarokin (“$2 Million to Humiliate the Nation,” Commentary, Jan. 15), can be found in the same issue’s Life and Style section.

Four color portraits celebrate famous Paula’s expensive “make-over” as your staffer gushes, “Her hair is subtly highlighted, her makeup is a tawny rhapsody and her tailored chocolate brown outfit is positively chic.”

The Jones peep show isn’t about the president’s “distinguishing characteristics,” but the media’s.

* Jones’ spokespsycho Susan Carpenter McMillan says that Jones’ hairstylist is part of their “defense team” (Jan. 18)? And she wonders why the majority of Americans don’t take Jones’ claims seriously!

* I had to laugh at the commentary by Sarokin. His suggestion that Paula should be a “patriot” and accept a cash settlement from Clinton is a joke. All along she has stated that an apology is all that is necessary. I have no doubt Clinton committed the act. If he can’t be man enough to apologize, he deserves no less than what was dished out to Clarence Thomas.

Am I the only person who is ashamed to have a president who lacks moral character?

* In my 20-plus years in human resources, legal disputes between the employers I have worked for and an aggrieved employee have always been tried to be settled through arbitration prior to any trial. Sarokin’s skills as a mediator are evident in his analysis of what Jones and Clinton should agree to now. This prolonged circus is harmful to all parties and our nation.

* Through persistence, Jones has reaffirmed the oldest of mother’s admonishments--the greatest measure of power is not who you are nor the realm of your control, but only learning when to open and shut your mouth.
