Council OKs Permit for Private School

A private school in a small shopping center has won approval from the City Council to continue operating until mid-1999.

The Planning Commission last November denied an operating permit for Crown Private School on East Orangethorpe Avenue. The school’s founder, T.C. Crownover, appealed that decision to the council, which approved a permit through July 1, 1999.

Planning commissioners said the school was too close to homes and lacked enough play area for students. City planners had also recommended denial.

Crownover said that in addition to a 6,000-square-foot outdoor play area, she will increase indoor play space to 3,000 square feet. Crownover also agreed to reduce the number of students from 150 to 125.

Crownover said her residential and commercial neighbors support the school, which opened in July.

Students and their parents urged the council to keep the school open: “I just love this school and I don’t want you to close it down,” Kelsey Schuler, 8, said.
