2 Gunmen Tie Up Employees, Rob Kmart

Two men with handguns broke into a Kmart store early Tuesday, tied up several employees and escaped with cash, lugging trash bags filled with the stolen money over fences and through yards before hopping into a nearby waiting car, police said.

The three employees, who were doing inventory work at the time of the 6:30 a.m. robbery, were uninjured.

The robbers, who stuffed an undisclosed amount of cash into the plastic trash bags before leaving the store, backtracked three times during their escape to pick up piles of money that had spilled along the way. Buena Park Police Sgt. Ken Coovert said the trash bags apparently split open as the men ran to the car.

“As the suspects started to get into their car, the bag again tore and all the contents spilled out on to the ground,” Coovert said. “The driver became impatient and started honking his horn, telling the other suspects to hurry.”

The commotion alerted several neighbors, who saw the suspects drive away in a gold-colored sports utility vehicle, police said. The men left without recovering all of the stolen money, Coovert said. No arrests have been made.
