Animal Shelter to Be Built at El Dorado Park

Long Beach will build a $3-million animal shelter on the eastern edge of El Dorado Park, although critics fear the loss of open space.

“This is a state-of-the-art facility,” said City Councilman Les Robbins, who represents the area. As for criticism of the plan, he said, “This is the worst case of NIMBY [Not In My Back Yard] I’ve seen in two years on the council.”

The shelter, at 7700 East Spring St. near the San Gabriel River Freeway, will be jointly operated by the city and the Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
