City to Issue Bigger Trash Cans, Drop Fee
Residents soon will be getting big trash cans from the city and a discount on their garbage collection fee.
In the next three to six months, two 96-gallon bins--one for recyclables and the other for other refuse--will be distributed to each home.
Monthly residential trash bills will drop two cents to $12.87.
Some elderly residents have complained that the bins will be too big for them to maneuver. City officials said they plan to supply smaller bins to those who request them.
Officials say the new bins will increase the city’s recycling rate, which currently fails state requirements. By 2000, cities throughout the state must recycle half of their refuse.
