Hearings Set on Pupils From Newport Coast
A series of public hearings are planned next week as the Laguna Beach Unified School District considers whether to accept an estimated 342 new students from a development along Newport Coast.
The hearings will focus on whether a $6.6-million agreement with the Newport Coast developer, the Irvine Co., is adequate to expand and renovate the district’s school buildings to accommodate the students.
Many parents say the offer should be rejected because schools already are overcrowded. Others say the school board could use the extra funds to repair its aging buildings.
Hearings will be held Monday at the Laguna Beach High School library; Wednesday at the El Morro Elementary School multipurpose room; and Thursday at the Top of the World School multipurpose room. All hearings start at 7 p.m.
