Police were searching Friday for a teenager who fired a shot at a gas station attendant after ordering the worker to give him cash.

The shooting occurred about 10:20 p.m. Thursday at the Unocal station at Orangethorpe Avenue and Moody Street in La Palma, police said.

The robber, who was in his late teens, pointed a semiautomatic handgun at the attendant and demanded money, Sgt. Eric Nunez said.

When the worker began to comply, the teen fired at him, sending a bullet through the victim’s jacket and into a countertop, Nunez said.

It is unclear why the teen opened fire.

Police said the teen then drove eastbound on Orangethorpe, escaping without any cash. The gas station attendant was not injured.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the La Palma Police Department at (714) 523-4552, Ext. 122.
