Domestic Violence Course Laudable

Re “High School Course Helps Girls End Cycle of Abuse,” Jan. 5:

I am pleased to finally hear of a high school-based program that combats a true social problem almost all teenagers today have some interaction with.

So often when we think of domestic violence, we consider only adult situations. But as statistics show, numerous adolescents have become innocent victims as well.

The domestic violence course at S.E.L.F. Alternative certainly has gained its success from the natural tendency of teenagers to be more willing to open up to their problems at school than at home.

The fact that this high school is the sole owner of a four-year grant for such a program is quite disturbing. Obviously, this restriction of funds is just another example of California’s brilliant Department of Education attempting to shield young citizens from what some may consider to be “too controversial.”

My congratulations go out to teacher Natalie Harrigan for her extreme efforts. Now that she has set the example, teenagers across America should soon be able to reap the benefits of a true educational system.
