The government freed about 300 prisoners in Chiapas on Saturday, in a move designed to encourage stalled peace talks with Zapatista rebels in the troubled southern state.

State officials said they plan to release at least 1,000 prisoners, many petty criminals who are eligible for parole under Mexico’s minimum sentencing laws.

The Notimex state news agency said the freed prisoners were presumed to be Zapatista supporters.
