College High’s Fate on Agenda
The Orange Coast Middle College High School, a program run by Newport-Mesa Unified School District, has failed to reach its goal of enrolling 150 students, and tonight the board will discuss the program’s fate.
Started in the fall of 1996, the program allows high school students to study at Orange Coast College. About 90 students enrolled in the program at the outset. This year only 60 enrolled, and trustees said they are worried about spending money on a program that is failing to attract enough students.
District officials say they spend $250,000 annually to run the program, much more per student than they spend at the other high schools in the district.
