5 Businesses Earn City’s Design Awards

Five local businesses will be granted 1997 Design Excellence Awards by the City Council today for efforts to improve the city’s appearance.

“This is something new we’re doing to promote good design and good projects,” Planning Director Brian Fisk said. “We wanted to recognize those people . . . whose projects will benefit the community in the long term.”

The businesses will be awarded plaques and banners to display on their storefronts.

Awards will be presented to the following: GTE for its office remodeling at 6802 Westminster Blvd.; Tosco Marketing for the design of the Union 76 gas station at 6322 Westminster Blvd.; United Oil for its service station remodeling at 5000 Westminster Blvd.; Westminster Memorial Park for signs, fencing and landscaping; and Bridgecreek Development for the New Saigon Mall and Cultural Court on Bolsa Avenue.

The City Council meets at 7 p.m. at 8200 Westminster Blvd.
