Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies rescued a man from a burning house early Tuesday after they were alerted by smoke while on patrol, authorities said.

No one was injured.

Deputies Pat Mathers and Ernesto Masson were driving north on Topanga Canyon Boulevard near Devonshire Street about 1:45 a.m. when they noticed smoke. They drove around the block and saw the upstairs of a two-story house in the 10000 block of Jordan Avenue engulfed in flames, Deputy Shawn Brownell said.

After alerting the sheriff’s dispatch center of the blaze, Mathers and Masson entered an unlocked rear screen door and kicked open a locked door separating the kitchen and living room. They awoke David Gordon, 55, and led him out of the house, Brownell said. They reentered the house, but found no other occupants.

Firefighters arrived shortly after the deputies and extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said. Officials estimated the damage at $70,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Wells said.
