Charles Jurors to Meet Again to Determine Killer’s Penalty
Jurors in the case of murderer Edward Charles III, who faces possible execution, did not decide a punishment Tuesday, their first day of deliberations.
Jurors are expected to return to Orange County Superior Court today in Santa Ana to continue deliberations in the penalty phase.
Charles, 24, of Fullerton, was convicted of murdering his parents and brother, but two juries have failed to bring about a penalty for Charles.
The first jury deadlocked. The second jury recommended death, but the verdict was thrown out because of juror misconduct.
Last week, the third jury was in jeopardy when two jurors admitted to seeing newspaper headlines regarding an alleged escape attempt from jail by Charles.
But Judge William R. Froeberg denied a request by Charles’ defense attorney to dismiss the two jurors.
