Public Input Sought on Downtown Plan
Drive through the eastern entrance of High Street, the city’s once-bustling center. The quaint wooden buildings to the right may give first-time visitors the impression that they’ll see rows of cute boutiques or restaurants further down the street lined with pepper trees.
But aside from the Moorpark Melodrama Theater and the Red River Restaurant, there are not many businesses on this block, which has been hurting for customers for years.
The city has spent thousands of dollars on studies for more than two decades to devise ways to revitalize the downtown area. But those plans haven’t been realized.
At 7 tonight, council members will hold a public hearing at City Hall, 799 Moorpark Ave., to discuss the latest plan, which they hope will revive downtown. The study will include zoning changes, traffic improvements and new aesthetic standards.
“This plan may be the last hope for downtown,” said Mayor Patrick Hunter, who said some business owners are becoming increasingly frustrated.
